Taiwan weather by month can look surprisingly different depending on where you travel. Taipei may be cool and drizzly while Kaohsiung is warm and sunny. Alishan can feel cold at sunrise even when people are wearing T-shirts at sea level.
That is why asking, “What is the best time to visit Taiwan?” does not have one simple answer.
For most first-time visitors who want comfortable sightseeing weather, March–April and October–November are excellent months to consider.
But that doesn’t mean you should avoid the rest of the year.
February brings cherry blossoms. Summer is great for beaches and longer daylight hours. Winter is one of our favorite periods for hot springs and southern Taiwan. And Taiwan’s mountain areas have their own climate entirely.

One thing to remember throughout this guide: Taiwan is mountainous.
Weather at sea level does not tell you what it will feel like at Alishan, Cingjing Farm, Hehuanshan or other high-elevation destinations.

For a classic first visit covering destinations such as Taipei, Jiufen, Sun Moon Lake, Alishan, Taichung, Tainan and Kaohsiung, we usually find spring and autumn the easiest seasons to work with.
March to April
Temperatures are comfortable, Taiwan is green, flowers are blooming and the intense summer heat has not arrived.
March is especially attractive for travelers hoping to combine city sightseeing with Taiwan’s cherry blossom season.
April is one of the easiest months for outdoor sightseeing.
October to November
These are also excellent months for multi-day travel.
Temperatures become more comfortable after summer, while much of central and southern Taiwan experiences pleasant conditions for sightseeing.
November is particularly useful for travelers who want to cover several regions of Taiwan without dealing with peak summer heat.
But “best” changes depending on what you want.
A traveler visiting Taiwan for hot springs might prefer January.
Someone coming specifically for cherry blossoms might choose February or March.
A beach holiday in Kenting has completely different weather priorities from an Alishan sunrise trip.
So let’s look at Taiwan month by month.
Taiwan Weather in January
January is usually Taiwan’s coldest month, but “cold” needs some context.
In Taipei and northern Taiwan, days are often cool and can feel colder because of humidity, wind and occasional rain.
Southern cities such as Tainan and Kaohsiung are generally milder.
Meanwhile, Taiwan’s high mountains can be genuinely cold.
If your itinerary includes Alishan sunrise, do not assume your Taipei clothing will be enough.

Best things to do in January
January is one of the best months to enjoy Taiwan’s hot-spring culture.
Beitou is easy to reach from Taipei, while places such as Wulai, Jiaoxi and mountain hot-spring areas make good winter additions to a longer trip.

January is also a good time to explore southern Taiwan if you prefer avoiding intense heat.
Tainan temples and historic streets are considerably more comfortable to explore than during midsummer.
What to pack
Bring layers.
A light or medium jacket will usually be more useful than an extremely heavy winter coat at low elevation.
Add warmer clothing if you plan to visit Alishan or other mountain destinations.
Taiwan Weather in February
February is still cool in northern Taiwan but has one major advantage:
cherry blossoms.
Taiwan’s cherry blossom season starts earlier than many visitors expect, with different locations reaching peak bloom at different times.
Yangmingshan, Wuling Farm, Sun Moon Lake and other mountain areas can all be attractive during the season.

February may also overlap with Lunar New Year.
This can have a much larger impact on your trip than the weather.
Train tickets, popular hotels and tourist destinations can become busy around the holiday period.
If your travel dates fall near Lunar New Year, book transportation and accommodation early.
Is February a good month to visit Taiwan?
Yes, especially if:
- you dislike hot weather
- you want to see cherry blossoms
- you enjoy hot springs
- you are comfortable carrying a light jacket
For families and senior travelers, the cooler temperature can make sightseeing easier than summer.
Taiwan Weather in March
March is one of the most interesting months to visit Taiwan because winter gradually gives way to spring.
Northern Taiwan can still have cool days early in the month, but conditions become noticeably warmer as March progresses.
Why visit Taiwan in March?
One major reason is Alishan cherry blossom season.
March can be an excellent time to combine Taipei with central Taiwan and Alishan.
However, cherry blossom dates vary from year to year.
A forecast is never a guarantee.
If blossoms are one of your main reasons for traveling, build some flexibility into the route rather than designing an itinerary around one tree blooming on one exact date.
March packing
Bring:
- comfortable walking clothes
- a light jacket
- rain protection
- warmer layers for mountain areas
March is one of the months when packing layers really helps.
Taiwan Weather in April
If someone asked us to choose one of the easiest months for a first trip to Taiwan, April would be high on the list.
Temperatures are generally warm without reaching the intensity of July or August.
This makes April particularly suitable for:
city sightseeing, hiking, cultural tours, Sun Moon Lake, Alishan and multi-day travel.
April is also a good time to explore Taiwan’s smaller islands before midsummer heat becomes more intense.
Where should you go in April?
Taipei works well.
Sun Moon Lake is pleasant.
Alishan is attractive even after the main cherry blossom period.
Southern Taiwan is warm but usually easier to explore than in midsummer.
If you’re deciding between several regions, April gives you considerable flexibility.
Taiwan Weather in May: Plum Rain Season Begins
May is where weather planning becomes more important.
Taiwan enters its Meiyu or plum-rain period during approximately May and June.
The Central Weather Administration identifies May–June as Taiwan’s main plum-rain season, with the most active period often occurring from around mid-May into June.
This does not mean it rains continuously every day for two months.
Some weeks can be pleasant.
Other periods may experience persistent rain or intense rainfall when a stationary front affects Taiwan.
Should you avoid Taiwan in May?
Not necessarily.
May has advantages:
temperatures are warm, vegetation is lush and some destinations are less crowded than during major holiday periods.
Yangmingshan‘s hydrangeas are also a seasonal attraction.
But May is not the month when we would tell travelers, “Don’t even think about rain.”
Pack an umbrella.
And if you’re traveling into mountain areas, monitor weather and road conditions carefully.
What happens to a private tour when it rains?
Light rain normally does not stop sightseeing.
But severe weather is different.
A responsible itinerary should never insist on a mountain attraction simply because it appears on the schedule.
This is one advantage of a private itinerary: the order of attractions can sometimes be adjusted according to conditions.
Weather safety always comes first.
Taiwan Weather in June
June is hot, humid and complicated.
The early part of the month can still be affected by plum-rain fronts.
Later in June, Taiwan increasingly shifts toward typical summer weather, including strong sunshine and afternoon thunderstorms.
What June feels like
The temperature number alone does not tell the entire story.
Humidity matters.
Walking around Taipei at 30°C in humid weather can feel considerably hotter than visitors from drier climates expect.
Plan outdoor sightseeing earlier in the morning where possible.
Use the middle of the day for lunch, museums or air-conditioned attractions.
Night markets become much more pleasant after sunset.

Taiwan Weather in July
July is summer.
Expect heat.
Expect humidity.
Expect strong sunshine.
And expect the possibility of brief but heavy afternoon thunderstorms.
This doesn’t make July a bad month to visit Taiwan.
It simply changes how you should travel.
How to plan Taiwan in July
Avoid placing every outdoor attraction between noon and 3 PM.
Start earlier.
Drink plenty of water.
Take breaks.
Use Taiwan’s excellent cafés, restaurants, museums and indoor attractions during the hottest part of the day.
Night markets are ideal for summer evenings.
Beach destinations such as Kenting become attractive, although sun protection is essential.
What about Alishan?
Alishan is cooler because of elevation.
That can make mountain destinations appealing during summer.
However, summer rainfall and severe weather can affect mountain roads and trails.

Taiwan Weather in August
August is one of Taiwan’s hottest months.
It is also within the period when tropical weather systems deserve particular attention.
A normal August day can still be sunny and completely suitable for travel.
The important point is not that “August = typhoon.”
It doesn’t.
The point is that if a typhoon approaches Taiwan, your itinerary may need to change quickly.
Should I cancel an August Taiwan trip because of typhoons?
No.
You cannot predict months in advance whether one particular week will experience a typhoon.
Instead, maintain reasonable flexibility and monitor Taiwan’s Central Weather Administration close to your travel date.
If severe weather does occur, mountain and coastal destinations deserve extra caution.
August travel style
City travel remains straightforward.
Taipei, Taichung, Tainan and Kaohsiung have enough indoor attractions, food experiences and shopping to adapt around afternoon heat or rain.

September still feels like summer during much of the month.
Temperatures remain warm, but conditions gradually transition toward autumn.
Typhoons can still affect Taiwan, so continue monitoring forecasts.
September also brings one of Taiwan’s most important traditional celebrations:
Depending on your travel dates, you may notice gatherings, barbecues and seasonal foods.
Is September a good month to travel?
Yes, but don’t pack for autumn just because the calendar says September.
Taiwan can still feel very summery.
Light clothing and sun protection remain important.

October is one of our favorite months for Taiwan travel.
Summer heat begins easing, outdoor sightseeing becomes more comfortable and many itineraries become easier to operate.
For a visitor who wants to combine:
Taipei + Jiufen + Sun Moon Lake + Alishan + Tainan
October can be an excellent choice.
One important exception: northern and northeastern Taiwan
Taiwan does not have one uniform climate.
Northeastern areas can become wetter when the northeast monsoon develops.
Places such as Keelung, Jiufen and Yilan can therefore experience very different weather from Taichung or Tainan on the same day.
This is exactly why looking at “Taiwan average rainfall” alone can be misleading.
Autumn travel

November may be one of the strongest all-round months for international visitors.
Temperatures are generally comfortable, extreme summer heat has passed and central and southern Taiwan often work particularly well for road trips and multi-day itineraries.

- Taichung
- Tainan

November is also a useful time for travelers who enjoy walking and photography.
Mountain temperatures can be noticeably cooler, so pack layers.
Autumn colors
Taiwan’s maple season does not work exactly like Japan’s autumn foliage season.
Because elevation and species vary, colors appear at different times in different locations.

December is a transition month.
Northern Taiwan becomes cooler, while southern Taiwan can remain very comfortable.
On some days Taipei feels mild.
On others, a cold front can make jackets suddenly feel necessary.

Taiwan is a relatively small island, but the Central Mountain Range creates significant regional weather differences.
Taipei and Northern Taiwan
Northern Taiwan generally experiences cooler and wetter winter conditions than the south.
The northeast monsoon can bring persistent cloudy or rainy conditions to northern and northeastern Taiwan.
Summer is hot and humid with afternoon thunderstorms.
Taichung and Central Taiwan
Central Taiwan often has pleasant autumn and winter conditions.
Sun Moon Lake can be visited throughout the year, although mornings and evenings may feel cooler than urban areas.

Tainan and Kaohsiung
Southern Taiwan is warmer.
Winter can be an especially comfortable time for visiting Tainan and Kaohsiung because daytime sightseeing is easier without midsummer heat.
Rainfall patterns are also quite different from Taipei.
You should never look at a Taipei weather chart and assume it describes all of Taiwan.
Eastern Taiwan
Hualien and Taitung have their own weather patterns because they face the Pacific and sit east of Taiwan’s central mountains.
Heavy rain, typhoons and earthquakes can also affect transportation and road access.
Check current conditions before any East Coast journey.
Alishan and High Mountains
Elevation changes everything.
Temperatures at Alishan are much cooler than Taiwan’s lowland cities.
This is particularly noticeable for travelers getting up before sunrise.
Even if Taipei is warm, carry appropriate mountain clothing.
Taiwan Rainy Season: When Does It Rain the Most?
There is no single rainy season that affects every region of Taiwan in exactly the same way.
However, travelers should understand three major patterns.
Spring rain
Northern Taiwan becomes wetter during late winter and spring.
Plum rain
Taiwan’s main Meiyu season occurs in May and June.
Stationary fronts can bring prolonged or heavy rainfall.
Summer rain and tropical systems
Summer brings convection, afternoon thunderstorms and tropical weather systems.
This is why a weather app showing a rain icon for every day of your summer trip does not necessarily mean it will rain continuously from breakfast until bedtime.
Summer rainfall can be intense but localized.
Taiwan Typhoon Season: Should Travelers Be Worried?
Taiwan lies in a region affected by western North Pacific tropical cyclones.
Typhoons are therefore a genuine travel consideration.
But they should be understood correctly.
A “typhoon season” does not mean Taiwan experiences typhoons every day for several months.
Most trips during summer proceed normally.
When a typhoon does approach, however, it can cause:
flight changes, ferry cancellations, attraction closures, mountain road restrictions and suspension of work or classes in affected areas.
What should travelers do?
Check the Central Weather Administration rather than relying only on a generic international weather app.
If an official warning affects your travel area, follow local instructions.
Do not attempt remote mountain roads, coastal viewpoints or hiking trails during dangerous conditions merely because you already paid for a hotel.

How Taiwan Weather Should Affect Your Itinerary
If you are spending only two or three days in Taipei, weather is relatively easy to work around.
A museum can replace an outdoor attraction.
A night market can move to another evening.
A café can rescue a rainy afternoon.
A multi-day Taiwan itinerary is more complicated.
Suppose your route is:
Taipei → Sun Moon Lake → Alishan → Tainan → Taipei
Weather matters differently at every stop.
Taipei may be rainy.
Sun Moon Lake may be cloudy.
Alishan may be much colder.
Tainan may be sunny.

But when conditions allow, the order or timing of attractions can sometimes be adjusted more easily than on a large fixed group tour.

Year-round essentials
Bring comfortable walking shoes, sun protection, a compact umbrella and clothing that dries reasonably quickly.
Spring

Summer
Light breathable clothing, sun protection and a reusable water bottle.
A thin outer layer can still be useful inside heavily air-conditioned buildings.
Autumn

Winter

Don’t Trust a Taiwan Weather Forecast Too Far in Advance

“What will the weather be like during my Taiwan trip next month?”
Climate and weather are not the same thing.
This article tells you what is typical.
It cannot predict whether one particular Tuesday will rain six weeks from now.
For actual travel decisions, start monitoring forecasts approximately one week before arrival and pay closest attention in the final few days.
For mountain and coastal trips, check conditions again before departure.

There really isn’t one universally bad month.
July and August are uncomfortable for travelers who dislike heat.
