I’ll be honest: for years, Pingtung was a place I sped past on buses on my way to Kenting National Park. I’d stare out the window at rice fields, banana farms, and mountains rising in the distance, thinking, “This looks beautiful… I should come back here someday.”
Well, “someday” finally happened — and it completely changed the way I see Taiwan’s south.
Pingtung turned out to be one of the most surprising counties I’ve explored in Taiwan. It’s tropical, slow-paced, deeply cultural, and full of experiences I didn’t expect: cocoa farms making award-winning chocolate, Aboriginal villages tucked in the mountains, stunning coastline, fresh seafood, temples buzzing with local life, and endless roads lined with palm trees waving like friendly neighbors.
If you’ve only visited Kenting, you’ve only tasted 10% of what Pingtung has to offer.
This guide is everything I experienced, loved, and wish I had known earlier — written in the warm, honest, slightly adventurous tone I use whenever I write about places that genuinely surprised me.
⭐ What Makes Pingtung Special?
Three words: authentic southern Taiwan.
Pingtung is the southernmost county in Taiwan and also one of the warmest. The temperature rarely drops below 20°C, and palm trees practically grow out of the sidewalks. The vibes? Soft, slow, tropical, welcoming.
What Pingtung Offers:
◉ Indigenous Paiwan & Rukai culture
◉ Cocoa farms & bean-to-bar chocolate
◉ Gorgeous beaches & fishing towns
◉ Forests, waterfalls & mountains
◉ Southern Taiwan’s friendliest people
◉ Open landscapes perfect for road trips
Pingtung is where Taiwan’s rural beauty and tropical coastline blend together in a way no other county can match.
🌴 How to Get to Pingtung
There’s no airport in Pingtung, but getting there is still easy.

The most common route:
● MRT or train → transfer to TRA → Pingtung
● Or rent a scooter/car in Kaohsiung for a full southern Taiwan road trip
From Taipei
● Take Taiwan High-Speed Rail to Kaohsiung Zuoying (1 hr 40 min)
● Transfer to TRA or bus to Pingtung
From Tainan
● Direct TRA line south; very convenient

☀️ Weather in Pingtung
Pingtung is one of the warmest, sunniest places in Taiwan.
Best time to visit:
October–April (cooler, breezy, perfect)
Summer:
Hot, humid, typhoon-prone — but great for beaches.

🗺️ Where to Go in Pingtung (Beyond Kenting)
Most people only know Pingtung for Kenting National Park. But Pingtung is full of hidden gems that feel like different worlds within one county.
Below are the places I personally recommend — written just like I’d tell a friend planning a southern Taiwan trip.
🌊 1. Donggang — Fishing Town, Bluefin Tuna & Ferry Hub
Donggang is Pingtung’s lively harbor town — colorful temples, friendly fishermen, seafood that tastes like it was pulled from the water 10 minutes ago.
Why Visit Donggang
● Fresh seafood everywhere
● Ferry departure point for Xiaoliuqiu
● Cultural festivals, including the Donggang King Boat Festival
● Bluefin tuna season (April–June) — incredible sashimi
What to Eat
● Bluefin tuna sashimi
● Flying fish roe
● Grilled squid
● Seafood rice bowls
If you arrive early before the Xiaoliuqiu ferry, wander around the market streets — they’re full of life, smells, and Pingtung charm.
🌴 2. Taiwan’s Cocoa Country — Chocolate Farms in Pingtung
Yes — Taiwan grows cacao.
Yes — Taiwan makes award-winning chocolate.
Yes — it’s all happening in Pingtung.
This is one of the biggest surprises of my travels here. Thanks to southern Taiwan’s tropical climate, Pingtung has quietly built a chocolate scene so good that Taiwanese cocoa has won international awards.
Where to Go
● Neipu Township cocoa farms
● Wanluan cacao fields
● Linluo bean-to-bar workshops
Activities
● Cacao farm tours
● Chocolate tasting (fruity, floral, surprisingly complex)
● DIY chocolate making
● Learning about fermentation and drying
Taiwan chocolate tastes different — bright, fruity, sometimes citrus-like. The more I tasted, the more I understood why chocolate connoisseurs now talk about Taiwan with excitement.
🛣️ 3. Checheng — The Gateway to Kenting
Checheng is a small Hakka town north of Kenting, often overlooked but absolutely worth a stop.
Best things to do
● Visit the Checheng Fuan Temple
● Explore the Hakka Cultural Park
● Try local Hakka cuisine and herbal dishes
● Wander around the old streets and wooden houses
I loved grabbing a cool herbal tea here before continuing the coastal road down to Kenting. It’s calm, local, and charming in a slow, southern way.
🌾 4. Manzhou — Pingtung’s Most Underrated Mountain Town
Manzhou sits behind Kenting, tucked into green hills and surrounded by farms, rivers, and road-trip-worthy scenery.
Why Visit Manzhou
● Quiet countryside
● Hidden coffee shops
● Riverside picnic spots
● Surfing community nearby
● A local weekend farmers market
Manzhou feels like what Kenting was 20 years ago — peaceful, raw, stunningly beautiful.
🐠 5. Houbihu & White Sand Bay (Baisha) — Coastal Beauty Without Crowds
Houbihu Harbor is all about fresh seafood and ocean breezes.
A few minutes away, Baisha Beach (White Sand Bay) is one of the most beautiful beaches in Taiwan.
Why Baisha is amazing
● Soft white sand
● Fewer crowds
● Calm water
● Great swimming and snorkeling
If Kenting’s main beaches feel too busy, Baisha gives you sunshine without the chaos.
🐣 6. Indigenous Culture in Pingtung — Paiwan & Rukai
One of the most meaningful parts of traveling in Pingtung is experiencing indigenous culture.
Pingtung is home to both the Paiwan and Rukai peoples, two of Taiwan’s most artistically rich tribes.
Paiwan
● Famous for glass bead craftsmanship
● Sun and snake totems
● Noble family traditions
● Meaningful wood carvings
Rukai
● Known for stone-slab houses
● Mythology and romantic legends
● Traditional tattoo culture
● Deep connection to mountains
Where to experience Indigenous culture
● Tribal villages around Sandimen
● Art studios showcasing beads and carvings
● Indigenous cafés serving millet, wild vegetables, and mountain herbs
● Cultural parks and workshops
These communities give southern Taiwan its cultural soul.
🐟 7. Fangliao & Donggang — Fishing Harbors Full of Flavor
Taiwan’s fishing culture is strong here.
Fangliao’s harbor is a great place for:
● Photos
● Seafood
● Strolling around painted lanes
● Experiencing everyday local life
It’s the kind of town where the fish is fresh enough to make you rethink what “fresh” even means.
🌄 8. Pingtung’s Mountains — Hidden Trails & Waterfalls
Most people know Pingtung for beaches — but it also has stunning mountains.
Best mountain spots
● Shuangliu National Forest
● Sichongxi Hot Springs
● Wutai (Rukai region)
● Forest trails above Sandimen
Whether you want waterfalls, hilltop views, or secret natural pools, Pingtung’s mountains deliver.
♨️ 9. Pingtung Hot Springs — Quiet Forest Retreats & Local Healing Waters
If you only associate hot springs with Taiwan’s cold northern mountains, Pingtung will surprise you. The county is home to Sichongxi Hot Springs (四重溪) — one of southern Taiwan’s most relaxing thermal areas, surrounded by forested hills, stone pathways, and old Japanese-era bathhouses.
Sichongxi has been famous for centuries. During the Japanese period, it was considered one of Taiwan’s top four hot spring regions, and it still has that sleepy, nostalgic feel today.
Why Sichongxi Hot Springs Are Special
● Naturally occurring sodium bicarbonate waters (great for skin)
● Comfortable temperature: not too hot, perfect for warm climates
● Surrounded by forest and quiet mountain air
● Small-town roads lined with guesthouses and local eateries
● A peaceful stop before or after Kenting
Best Things to Do in Sichongxi
● Try an outdoor bath under the trees
● Walk the hot spring street at night
● Grab herbal meals at local restaurants
● Stay overnight in a hot-spring hotel
Travel Tip
Come in the evening when the surrounding hills glow softly, and the hot spring steam feels like a warm tropical blanket. It’s the perfect way to unwind after a day of beaches or mountain exploring.
🏞️ 10. Wutai Indigenous Village — A Rukai Mountain Paradise
If you’re willing to venture deeper into Pingtung’s mountains, Wutai (霧台) is one of the most rewarding and culturally rich destinations in southern Taiwan. Home to the Rukai people, Wutai is known for its breathtaking stone-slab architecture, mountain views, and calm that feels almost spiritual.
Driving up to Wutai is an experience by itself — winding roads, shifting clouds, lush valleys — and once you reach the village, you enter a different world entirely.
What Makes Wutai So Incredible
● Stone-slab houses built from mountain slate
● Colorful totems and traditional Rukai art
● A rich culture of myth, romance, and nature
● Fresh mountain air that smells like cedar and earth
● Peaceful, slow village atmosphere
Unlike touristy mountain attractions, Wutai feels wonderfully authentic. Locals often sit outside their homes carving wood, weaving fabric, or tending to gardens filled with medicinal plants.
