Pingtung turned out to be one of the most surprising counties I’ve explored in Taiwan. There’s no airport in Pingtung, but getting there is still easy.
From Kaohsiung
The most common route:
● MRT or train → transfer to TRA → Pingtung
● Or rent a scooter/car in Kaohsiung for a full southern Taiwan road trip
From Taipei
● Take Taiwan High-Speed Rail to Kaohsiung Zuoying (1 hr 40 min)
● Transfer to TRA or bus to Pingtung
From Tainan
● Direct TRA line south; very convenient

Donggang is Pingtung’s lively harbor town — colorful temples, friendly fishermen, seafood that tastes like it was pulled from the water 10 minutes ago.

Yes — it’s all happening in Pingtung.
This is one of the biggest surprises of my travels here. Thanks to southern Taiwan’s tropical climate, Pingtung has quietly built a chocolate scene so good that Taiwanese cocoa has won international awards.

Checheng is a small Hakka town north of Kenting, often overlooked but absolutely worth a stop.

● Wander around the old streets and wooden houses
I loved grabbing a cool herbal tea here before continuing the coastal road down to Kenting. It’s calm, local, and charming in a slow, southern way.
🌾 4. Manzhou — Pingtung’s Most Underrated Mountain Town
Manzhou sits behind Kenting, tucked into green hills and surrounded by farms, rivers, and road-trip-worthy scenery.

A few minutes away, Baisha Beach (White Sand Bay) is one of the most beautiful beaches in Taiwan.

If you only associate hot springs with Taiwan’s cold northern mountains, Pingtung will surprise you. The county is home to Sichongxi Hot Springs (四重溪) — one of southern Taiwan’s most relaxing thermal areas, surrounded by forested hills, stone pathways, and old Japanese-era bathhouses.
Sichongxi has been famous for centuries. During the Japanese period, it was considered one of Taiwan’s top four hot spring regions, and it still has that sleepy, nostalgic feel today.

If you’re willing to venture deeper into Pingtung’s mountains, Wutai (霧台) is one of the most rewarding and culturally rich destinations in southern Taiwan. Home to the Rukai people, Wutai is known for its breathtaking stone-slab architecture, mountain views, and calm that feels almost spiritual.
Driving up to Wutai is an experience by itself — winding roads, shifting clouds, lush valleys — and once you reach the village, you enter a different world entirely.
