Let’s get one thing straight: I don’t enjoy hiking. I like the idea of hiking. The fresh air, the nature, the Instagram photos that make me look outdoorsy. But the sweat, the stairs, the occasional bug flying into my face? Not so much.
And yet, there I was in Taipei, at the bottom of Elephant Mountain, also known as Xiangshan, wearing sneakers that were kind of meant for hiking (but mostly meant for walking to the fridge).

Why? Because I had heard whispers. Whispers of an epic view, the kind that makes you forget about your aching knees and your poor life choices. Also, I saw it on a travel blog and it looked cool.
So I did it. I climbed Elephant Mountain. And here are 7 sweaty, hilarious, and surprisingly inspiring reasons why you should too.
1. The View at the Top Is Basically a Screensaver
You know that beautiful Taipei skyline with Taipei 101 looking tall and majestic, surrounded by city lights and tiny cars that look like ants? That’s the view from Elephant Mountain.
When you finally drag your tired body up the steps, dripping with sweat and possibly regretting your lunch choices, you’ll see that view — and suddenly, everything feels worth it. Even the part where your thighs screamed at you on stair number 287.
Pro tip: go at sunset. You’ll get a golden sky, soft light, and maybe even a few “oohs” and “aahs” from fellow climbers (who are also pretending they’re not tired).

2. It Only Feels Like Climbing Mt. Everest
The whole trail is just about 600 steps. That’s it! Doesn’t sound so bad, right?
Well. Let me introduce you to Taiwanese stairs. These steps are like that overachieving student in your class who just has to go above and beyond. They’re tall, uneven, and seem to multiply the more you climb. Each one feels like a personal challenge.
By step 100, you’re sweating. By 200, you’re negotiating with your legs. By 300, you’re questioning your life. But don’t worry — it’s a short hike. You’ll reach the top before you actually die.

3. You’ll Bond with Strangers (Through Suffering)
There’s a certain kind of friendship that only forms between people who are equally dying on a staircase.
At Elephant Mountain, everyone’s in the same boat: sweating, panting, wiping their forehead dramatically. Strangers will smile at you like, “Yep, we’re in this together.” You’ll feel like part of a secret hiking cult — the one where the password is “Is it much farther?”
Plus, you’ll meet people from all over the world. I passed tourists from Europe, hikers from Japan, even a guy from Canada who was hiking in flip-flops (don’t be like him).

4. You Can Take the Most Taipei Photo Ever
At the viewpoint, there’s a spot where you can pose with Taipei 101 perfectly in the background. It’s the “I came to Taipei and hiked something” photo. No one needs to know that you almost fainted halfway through.
You can even climb up onto one of the big rocks if you’re feeling brave (and not afraid of slipping on your own sweat). Strike a yoga pose, throw up a peace sign, or just collapse dramatically. Either way, your Instagram feed will thank you.

5. It’s Free (And We Love Free)
Let’s be honest: traveling can get expensive. But hiking Elephant Mountain? Totally free. No entrance fees. No tour guides trying to sell you bottled water for $5. Just you, nature, and an unlimited supply of your own breathlessness.
It’s one of the few experiences in Taipei where your wallet can relax — while your quads do not.
6. You’ll Feel Like a Hero (After It’s Over)
There’s something magical about completing a hike. You get to the top, take a deep breath, and suddenly you feel like a legendary mountain warrior. Or maybe just a sweaty human who didn’t give up. Same difference.
The endorphins kick in. You’re proud. You’re invincible. You’re already planning to tell your friends back home how “it wasn’t that bad” while casually ignoring how close you were to giving up at the halfway point.
Bonus: you’ll sleep like a baby that night. A baby with sore legs and a proud heart.
7. The Name Is Elephant Mountain — And That’s Adorable
I mean, Elephant Mountain. Come on. That’s the cutest name for a mountain ever. It’s not intimidating like “Mount Doom” or “Death Peak.” It’s an elephant! A big, friendly, slow-moving animal that just wants to chill and eat leaves.
The mountain supposedly looks like an elephant’s back (use your imagination). But even if you can’t see it, the name alone makes the hike more fun. You’re not hiking a mountain — you’re climbing an elephant. And that’s just objectively cool.

Bonus Tips for Surviving (and Enjoying) the Hike
Since I’ve now joined the sweaty elite who have conquered Elephant Mountain, allow me to share some survival tips:
+ Bring water. Yes, it’s a short hike, but your body will sweat like it’s running a marathon in a sauna.
+ Bug spray = your best friend. Unless you enjoy being a buffet for mosquitoes.
+ Don’t wear flip-flops. I saw someone do it. He looked deeply, deeply unhappy.
+ Take breaks. The hike has resting areas and benches. Use them. Gasp dramatically while you do.
+ Go early morning or late afternoon. Midday heat will melt your face off.

Worth Every Step (and Sweat Drop)
Elephant Mountain is the kind of hike that sneaks up on you — not because it’s long or complicated, but because it surprises you. It’s short, yes. But it’s also steep, sweaty, and has a way of turning even the laziest traveler into a sweaty adventurer with a phone full of skyline selfies.
Whether you’re a seasoned hiker or someone who thinks the only “trail” they need is in a shopping mall, this little mountain will challenge you, reward you, and give you a memory that sticks (along with your shirt to your back).
So go ahead. Climb the elephant. Sweat a little. Laugh a lot. And don’t forget to wave at Taipei 101 from the top — you’ve earned it. Read more “Blossom in Beauty: Exploring Yangmingshan on Our Exclusive Day Tour“
