Tamsui Fort San Domingo (淡水紅毛城)

Tamsui Fort San Domingo, also known as Hongmao Castle, is a significant cultural landmark that offers visitors a glimpse into Taiwan’s colonial past and its interactions with various foreign powers. Additionally, the fort’s architecture is a blend of European styles, reflecting its history under Spanish, Dutch, and British influence. The stone-built fortress features a unique mix of Western and Eastern design elements.

It was originally built by the Spanish in 1628 as a wooden fortification to defend against potential attacks from pirates and rival European powers. After the Spanish left Taiwan, the Dutch East India Company took over and expanded the fortification, transforming it into a stone fortress between 1644 and 1646. The fort served as a major administrative center during the Dutch colonial period. In the 19th century, during the First Opium War, the British briefly occupied Tamsui and used the fort as a consulate. After the war, the Qing Dynasty took control of Taiwan, and the fort was used as a residence for British consuls.
