Before Taiwan High-Speed Rail started to operate officially, it takes more than 4 hours to travel from Taipei to Kaohsiung. But now, it takes only one and a half hours. THSR changed the experience of traveling in Taiwan. If you only have limited time but you are eager to travel from the north to the south, then, THSR would be your first choice with no doubt.
1. How to buy tickets?
If you are in the station, you can get them at the ticket booth or at the automatic vendor machine. Cash and credit cards are both accepted.
If you are not in the station, you can go to a convenient store and operate the automatic service kiosk step by step. After the kiosk prints out the payment note, remember to hand it to the cashier and pay in cash to collect your ticket. You can also book the tickets online.
*Open booking period is from 28 days before the date of departure (including departure day) to 1 hour before the time of departure.
*Maximum of 10 tickets permitted for each booking. For return tickets, a maximum of 5 tickets can be booked at a time.
2. Types of tickets
There are three different main types of tickets－regular ticket, business seat ticket, non-reserved seat ticket.

3. Tickets open for online booking:
The system provides booking for reserved seats with adult tickets, child tickets, senior tickets, and disabled tickets.
Maximum of 10 tickets permitted for each booking. For return tickets, a maximum of 5 tickets can be booked at a time. (Senior or disabled tickets are available only for passengers who have the ID of R. O. C.)
4. Payment of online booking:
After booking, remember to make payment by the deadline (See Payment Terms). Payments and collection of tickets can also be made at the THSR stations and convenience stores. VISA, MasterCard, JCB, American Express, and China UnionPay cards are accepted for online payment.
Payment Terms:
For departure three days after booking, the payment should be made within three days of booking.
For departure within three days of booking, the latest payment should be made one day before departure.
For same-day booking, the payment should be made at least 30 minutes before departure.
5. Change of Booking
Before collecting tickets and the payment is not completed, passengers can change the booking record, reduce the number of tickets, and cancel the booking through the system free of charge.
Passengers who have made the payment but have not collected the tickets can cancel the ticket at least 30 minutes before departure through the system or at the Ticket Window in any THSR station.
Passengers who want to change the booking and reduce the number of tickets after payment can pay the difference, or get the refund.
6. Cancellation of Booking
Passengers who have made the payment but have not collected the tickets can cancel the ticket at least 30 minutes before departure through the system, T Express, or at the Ticket Window in any THSR station.
Before completion of payment, passengers are able to cancel the booking through the system free of charge. After payment is made online and before collecting tickets, passengers could cancel their booking(s) by themselves on this system at least 30 minutes before departure, a handling fee of NT$20 per ticket will be applicable.

Insert your ticket into the gate and remember to withdraw the ticket. If your ticket was sold from a convenient store, then you can put the QR code onto the sensor to pass the gate. (By the way, if you buy the ticket in the convenient store and keep the ticket stub after traveling, you can have some discount or bonus for some certain products.)
9. Free shuttle bus
You may notice that some stations are set in remote areas. However, with the service of shuttle buses, you can easily get downtown. To enjoy the free service, just show your THSR tickets to the driver. For more transfer information, please see here
