Sun Moon Lake Travel Update 2026
If you’re planning to visit Sun Moon Lake in 2026, the good news is that this beautiful alpine lake remains one of Taiwan’s most accessible and scenic destinations. Located in Nantou County, Sun Moon Lake continues to attract travelers looking for a relaxing escape from Taipei’s busy city life.
The famous Sun Moon Lake cycling trail, often ranked as one of the most beautiful cycling routes in the world, is fully open and remains one of the top activities around the lake. Visitors can rent bikes and ride along the peaceful shoreline while enjoying breathtaking mountain views.
Boat cruises across the lake are also operating daily, connecting the main areas of Shuishe Pier, Xuanguang Temple, and Ita Thao Village. These boat rides allow travelers to experience the lake from different perspectives while easily exploring multiple attractions in a single day.
Another highlight is the Sun Moon Lake Ropeway, which offers panoramic views over the lake and surrounding mountains. The cable car connects the Ita Thao area with the Formosan Aboriginal Culture Village and has become one of the most popular viewpoints in the region.
In recent years, the Ita Thao lakeside village has also grown into a lively cultural and food destination where visitors can try indigenous cuisine, local street snacks, and the famous Sun Moon Lake Assam black tea.
With its peaceful scenery, cultural experiences, and outdoor activities, Sun Moon Lake remains one of the best overnight destinations in Taiwan, especially for travelers who want to explore beyond Taipei.

Best Time to Visit Sun Moon Lake
Sun Moon Lake is beautiful throughout the year, but the best time to visit is usually from October to April, when the weather is cooler and the skies are clearer.
Spring (March – May) brings comfortable temperatures and blooming flowers around the lake.
Summer (June – August) offers lush green scenery, although it can be warmer and occasionally rainy.
Autumn (September – November) is considered one of the best seasons thanks to pleasant weather and clear mountain views.
Winter (December – February) is quieter, and the misty lake scenery creates a peaceful and romantic atmosphere.
No matter the season, spending 2 days at Sun Moon Lake allows travelers to enjoy cycling, boat cruises, temples, and the local culture without rushing.
🚘 DAY 1: Goodbye Taipei, Hello Mountains!
8:00 AM – Pickup Time
The day started early. Like, too early. But the friendly driver guide, Wilson from Justaiwantour picked me up right on time in front of my Taipei hotel. No stress, no “where’s the bus?” panic. Just me, my suitcase, and the feeling that something good was about to happen.
The ride to Sun Moon Lake takes about 3 to 3.5 hours depending on traffic. Honestly, I thought I’d sleep in the van, but the scenery was too pretty. Mountains, trees, villages, and green, green everywhere. It felt like Taiwan was giving me a hug.

First Stop – Wenwu Temple
Our first real stop was Wenwu Temple, sitting proudly above the lake. I was half-asleep, but as soon as I saw it, I’m wide awake. The temple is colorful with lions, dragons, and a long staircase of wishes. Literally. People write their wishes on golden plaques along the stairs.
I wished for good grades, better skin, and maybe a boyfriend (don’t judge). I also took a million photos. Every angle looked like a postcard.

Next – Lunch at a local restaurant
We had lunch in a cozy local restaurant. They have this dish a roasted chicken cooked in a clay jar! It’s a must try! The chicken skin is crispy, the meat juicy and tender, and you don’t even have to battle the bones. They serve it beautifully pre-carved for you.
The restaurant itself stands out with elegant bamboo themed decor, including bamboo chairs, tables, teapots, and even ceiling details. It creates a refined, almost tea house like atmosphere.
@bonappetitmag We met chefs Lucas Sin and Eric Sze outside Taipei to taste some of Taiwan’s best clay-oven-roasted chicken. This ancient and elemental cooking method relies on the chef's expertise and years of practice rather than thermometers. #Taiwan #roastedchicken #clayoven #tradition ♬ original sound – Bon Appétit Magazine
Afternoon – Boat Ride on the Lake
Time for the highlight: a Sun Moon Lake boat cruise! This lake is huge!. It’s called Sun Moon Lake because one side is shaped like a sun, and the other like a moon. I didn’t really see the shapes (I’m not great at geometry), but it was still awesome.
The boat made three main stops:
1. Xuanguang Temple Pier
We got off and climbed up to Xuanguang Temple. It’s small but peaceful, and the view of the lake from up there? Chef’s kiss.
Also, there’s a stall selling Ah Ma’s Tea Eggs. It’s so famous, there’s usually a line. I don’t even like tea eggs that much, but I had to try one. And guess what? I liked it. Maybe it’s the mountain air?

2. Ita Thao Village
This is the indigenous area of the Thao tribe, one of Taiwan’s native peoples. Ita Thao Village is full of cute shops and yummy snacks. I tried wild boar sausage (yes, wild boar!) and millet mochi. Super chewy and yummy. Also bought a fridge magnet for my mom.
3. Shuishe Pier
This was the main pier and close to our hotel. After the boat, we walked around a bit, enjoying the breeze and the sound of water. The lake was shining like a mirror. It almost made me forget my phone battery was at 5%.
Evening – Relax at the Hotel
We stayed in a lovely lakeside hotel. It’s clean, comfy, and with a view of the water. I took a long bath (don’t ask how long), then watched the sunset from my balcony. Honestly, it felt like a movie scene. Except I was alone and in my pajamas.
Dinner was at the hotel restaurant. Hotpot with fresh veggies and mushrooms from the nearby mountains. I slept like a baby afterward. End of Day 1.

🚴🏻♀️ DAY 2: Bikes, Ropeways, and Tea!
Morning – Breakfast & Bike Ride
The second day of my 2 Days Sun Moon Lake tour from Taipei. Woke up early (again), but it was totally worth it. The hotel breakfast had toast, eggs, porridge, fruit, and… more tea eggs. Taiwan really loves tea eggs.
After eating, we rented bikes and rode along the Sun Moon Lake Cycling Path. This path is famous. Like, “Top 10 Cycling Routes in the World” famous. It’s flat, easy, and the view? Holy wow. Lake on one side, forest on the other. I kept stopping to take pictures, so I think my 1-hour ride took more like 2. But who cares? I wasn’t racing.
Next Stop – Sun Moon Lake Ropeway
Time to go up, up, up! The Sun Moon Lake Ropeway (aka cable car) took us over the forest with amazing views of the lake and mountains. I waved at birds. They didn’t wave back.
At the end of the ride is the entrance to the Formosan Aboriginal Culture Village, a big theme park with rides and cultural shows. I didn’t go in this time (running out of energy, to be honest), but I heard it’s worth it if you have time.
Instead, I just chilled at the ropeway station, sipped some cold milk tea, and stared at the view like a philosopher thinking about life. Very deep moment.
Afternoon – Tea Time at Antique Assam Tea Farm
Next stop was something I didn’t expect to love so much: Antique Assam Tea Farm. It’s like stepping into a different time. Red brick buildings, peaceful gardens, and rows of tea plants waving in the breeze.
We joined a mini tea tour and learned how they grow and dry Assam black tea. I even got to try making tea myself. I spilled a little (ok, a lot), but the guide was nice and pretended not to see.
And wow!!! The tea was good. I bought a small box to take home. I’m now a certified tea snob. Sorry, bubble tea.

On the Way Back – Stop at Taichung
On the drive back to Taipei, we stopped for a short break in Taichung, Taiwan’s second-largest city. Just enough time to walk around a little, grab a snack, and stretch our legs.
We visited Rainbow Village, a tiny street art place painted by an old veteran. Super colorful, super Instagrammable, and full of positive vibes.
Also got a cup of the original Taichung bubble tea. Yup, this is where it all began. And yes, it tasted better than the stuff back home. Sorry again, local shops. And this is the original of bubble tea
Back to Taipei by Evening
After a few more hours, we were back in Taipei by around 6 or 7 PM. Tired but happy. My phone was full of photos, my bag full of tea, and my heart full of peaceful lake vibes. Concluded my 2 days Sun Moon Lake tour from Taipei.
